World's Rich Got Even Wealthier During Recession
Filed under: Personal Finance, News, The Economy, Lynnette Khalfani-Cox Here's more proof that you can still make a buck during an economic downturn. At least you can if you're already rich. According to Reuters, the world's richest individuals got even wealthier in 2009, amid one of the worst economic recessions of our lifetime. Collectively, the world's ranks of millionaires grew 17% to 10 million people, whose aggregate wealth jumped 19% to $39 trillion, based on a Merrill Lynch-Capgemini world wealth report. Which countries have the most millionaires? The good old U.S.A leads the pack. It's home to 2.87 million millionaires. Next on the list is Japan, with 1.65 million, Germany with 861,000 millionaires, and China with 477,000. Most of these individuals drew their wealth from stock market portfolios that rebounded after taking a nosedive in 2008. Others derived their riches from real estate and business holdings. http://xml.channel.aol.com/xmlpublisher/fetch.v2.xml?option=expand_relative_urls&dataUrlNodes=uiConfig,feedConfig,entry&id=902132&pid=902131&uts=1277410210 http://cdn.channel.aol.com/cs_feed_v1_6/csfeedwrapper.swf 10 Inconveniences of the Recession 3. No More Trays in Some College Cafeterias It makes total eco-sense: Colleges and universities, from New York University to The University of Minnesota are ditching those iconic plastic cafeteria trays to help reduce waste and water usage. Gradually most of the country's colleges and universities are expected to follow suit. A trial at Harvard last year concluded schools could save 20% more food by going tray-less. Schools also claim they can save thousands of gallons of water every month. But the move will also mean more plate juggling -- plus the risk of spillage and having to discover a new way to create a make-shift sled during snow season. AOL AP BlackVoices.com 10 Inconveniences of the Recession By Farnoosh Torabi From job losses to bankruptcies, foreclosure and investment losses the recession's definitely taking a toll on our lives. The smaller, day-to-day inconveniences are adding up, as well. Using the arrows at left, click through our gallery to see a run-down of the ways that people are being squeezed by more than just their finances. 10 Inconveniences of the Recession 1. Fewer to Help in an Emergency Local budget deficits are sparking layoffs at fire departments and police stations. That has some residents worried about safety and protection. Oakland, for example, a city known for a high crime rate, is thinking of laying off 140 police officers. The state of Michigan recently announced police layoffs starting this summer, including 100 state troopers and all 82 new troopers who graduated from a training academy in December. And in Boston a new proposed budget would make cities and towns downsize their police and firefighter staff. Fluffy may have to spend a few extra hours in that tree until help arrives. 10 Inconveniences of the Recession 2. More Crowds at Libraries Free books, DVDs and Internet access had Americans visiting their local library 1.4 billion times last year and checking out two billion items, both a 10% jump from the 2001 recession, according to the American Library Association. But the freebies are now coming at a price: time. At the C. Burr Artz Library in Baltimore, Maryland, student Megan Adkins says she's usually a few spots behind in line, while last year she never had to wait. At the Hoboken Public Library in New Jersey, cardholder Stuart Ginsberg also sees a noticeable slowdown. "There is a waiting list to use a computer," he says. For now it's not a major inconvenience, library goers say, but with proposed library budget cuts across the country conditions may worsen. Many of the 15 library branches in Annapolis, Maryland, for example, are planning for fewer help desk assistants, fewer materials and the removal of Sunday hours. In all more than 40% of states report a drop off in state funding for their public libraries this year. 10 Inconveniences of the Recession 3. 10 Inconveniences of the Recession 4. Post Office Closures and Shortened Hours Some post offices are shutting down entirely due to a budget shortfall and earnings losses. Overall The U.S. Postal Service lost $2.8 billion last year. In towns across the country residents are grumbling over early office closings and shutdowns. One business owner from Short Hills, New Jersey is angry his local post office has shortened its lobby hours during the week, since he now has to take time away from work to access his post office box. Before he could do it on the way to the office or on his way home from work. New York City's only 24-hour mailing center, the James A. Farley Post Office in Manhattan, will soon trim its hours and no longer be open all the time. 10 Inconveniences of the Recession 5. Young Adults Are Moving Back Home A shrinking job market and a desperate need to save has many young adults returning to live at home with mom and dad. The latest Census figures from 2008 show 20 million adults between the ages of 18 to 34 live at home with their parents -- that's a third of the age group! It's affecting college graduates the hardest, with about 50% expected to "boomerang" home after graduating in May. Jeremy Diamond 22, just graduated cum laude from American University. Despite three internships under his belt he's yet to land a job and, in the meantime, has moved back home. While his parents have been supportive, he's not thrilled with the situation. "I don't want to be putting more strain on my parents and their finances...I want to take responsibility for my own affairs. I want a change of scenery and I want to make a clean break into adulthood," says Diamond. 10 Inconveniences of the Recession 6. It's Tougher to Get Into Grad School Your chances of getting into a master's program may be tougher, as more college grads apply in an effort to dodge the sour job market. Companies plan to hire nearly a quarter fewer new college grads this year, according to The National Association of Colleges and Employers and that has some graduate programs reporting a jump in applications by 20% this year. MBA applications at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business, for example, were up 10% over last year, and it was the most competitive year in the school's history. Ninety-five percent of accepted students ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class. 10 Inconveniences of the Recession 7. Friends and Family Asking for More Money It's always tough when a friend or relative asks for money. Deals often go sour. Just ask Richard Dreyfus, who's battling with family in court over a loan gone awry. In the recession we're likely to get hit up with more loan requests from friends and family. In fact total loan volume at Virgin Money USA, a peer-to-peer lending web site, has doubled to $400 million since 2007. Experts Jeanne Fleming and Leonard Schwarz, authors of Isn't It Their Turn to Pick Up the Check?, find that more than half of Americans say there's someone who's constantly asking them for money and now they view the economy as a prime time to ask again. But lenders beware! Fleming and Schwarz say a third of the time not a single penny ever gets returned. 10 Inconveniences of the Recession 8. Shorter Store and Mall Hours You may want to make a quick phone call to check store hours before driving on over to your local restaurant, retailer or mall. Many businesses are trimming their operating hours to curb expenses in the recession. It's occurring at popular stores like Best Buy and Barnes and Noble, as well as at local eateries and malls. Westfield Group, which runs 55 malls in the U.S., said most of its locations will open a half hour later and close a half hour earlier. This is troubling some shop owners within malls. For them, less time to be open may mean fewer sales. And if you visit a Walgreen to refill a prescription drug, double-check the schedule. The drugstore is scaling back hours at some of its pharmacies. 10 Inconveniences of the Recession 9. Fewer Stores, More Shopping Annoyances With store bankruptcy filings on the rise, you may need to drive further to find alternatives to your favorite retailers or reroute your trip. Circuit City, which liquidated this spring, emptied all 567 stores. Linens' and Things closed 370 stores last fall. The Sharper Image shut down 86 stores. Altogether 148,000 retail stores from big-box to mom-and-pop shops closed in 2008 - the most since the 2001 recession, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers. This year another 73,000 stores are forecast to go out of business. 10 Inconveniences of the Recession Overall, one lesson to be learned from these millionaires is that they were well-served by having a diversified range of investments -- everything from residential and commercial property to commodities. As I explained in my book, The Money Coach's Guide to Your First Million, self-employed people are also far more likely to become millionaires than W-2 wage earners who work for others. Eager to join the ranks of the millionaire class? It certainly wouldn't hurt to have a team of advisers giving you good advice. That is another trait shared by the wealthy. So the next time you think that you "can't afford" good financial help, pause a moment and consider that you can't afford not to have such assistance -- at least not if you want to become very rich. We have all seen the footage of manic fans fainting at the mere sight of the King of Pop, and we all (though none of us will admit it now) begged for those Michael Jackson jackets - be it the "Thriller" or "Beat It" version - while we sat and watched that Motown 25 Special (watch below) 800 times on our old Betamaxes, but this D.C. woman, featured in The Washington Post, has taken her love for Michael Jackson to a whole new level. And, unfortunately for her neighbors, it ain't pretty. It all started a year ago on the day Michael Jackson died. It's interesting that everyone keeps saying that they "can't believe it's been a year already." Jewel Lewis-Hall has been working on her makeshift Michael monument since June 25, 2009, when we lost our beloved Michael to a combination of bad drugs and bad doctors. She started with just one photo on the porch of her house. Then she added another photo. And then another. And soon there were 25. Over the year, she and her daughter, Maxcine Lewis, continued to add Michael Jackson "memorabilia" (AKA a bunch of cheesy hand-painted crap) to the porch. There were roses, beaded gloves (there is no word on actually who they belong to) and stuffed animals, because nothing says Michael Jackson like a stuffed elephant. On rare occasions (thank God), neighbors and passers-by are treated to a television placed on the front porch that plays Jackson videos and concert footage. The entire house has now become a shrine for the entertainer, and one can't walk two steps up the porch or in to their living room without bumping in to some needlepoint or Lite Brite rendition of Michael Jackson or his brethren. In an interview with the Post's Joe Hein, her husband was asked what he thinks about the shrine. He just smiles. It's a long, long smile. Translation: I'm so sick of this sh*t. Either way, it's clear who's the king of this castle: Michael Jackson. "He knows I'm crazy about Michael Jackson," she told the Post. "He just really doesn't have a say-so," her daughter adds, laughing. "If he told her to pack this stuff up, he'd have to leave." Strangely, this mother-and-daughter team wouldn't describe themselves as obsessed. They say their feelings for Michael are much deeper. They have loved him for years. Oh, did I mention they never met him or saw him perform in person? Still, they claim they have history with him (even if it is only in their minds). As a little girl, Maxcine secretly wished that her mother would meet Michael Jackson and marry him and that he would become her stepfather. They would then live happily ever after at Jackson's Neverland Ranch. On one of Jackson's long-ago visits to Washington, Jewel sent a letter to his hotel inviting him to services at her Jehovah's Witness congregation. They feel tied to Jackson and their porch is how they stay connected with someone they still can't quite believe has died, but on the bright side, " I can sit right here on my porch and, Bam! I can see him," Jewel says. Lewis-Hall, who works nights cleaning Senate office buildings and days serving food at Anacostia High School, has been accumulating her collection for years. Lately, though, she's put her Michael Memorabalia fest in overdrive, collecting all things Jackson. She buys old albums and posters at flea markets and T-shirts at department stores. "Every time I get a chance, I go and buy $50 worth," she says. After guessing that she has 100 Jackson photographs, she takes a visitor inside and easily shows that she has much more than that number. As she leafs through the photos, she displays the excitement of a kid showing off prized baseball cards: "Look at Michael!" she squeals. On the walls, pictures of Jackson (and several of President Barack Obama) share equal billing with photos of children and grandchildren. On the turntable, (yes, turntable) Jackson's "Dirty Diana" is playing softly. The Lewis-Hall family has owned their D.C. home for 13 years and seem to bask in the attention their Porch-o-Michael attracts. They say none of their neighbors have ever complained and that almost all of the feedback they've received has been positive. Between me and you, I'll file that under hard-to-believe. But God bless them, I'm sure now that the anniversary of his death is over, they will be about the business of taking everything down, right? "No," she says, "I really can't see myself taking it down," she says slowly, as if the thought has made her sad. "If anything, I'll get more stuff. Better stuff." Somewhere, if you listen veeeery quietly, her neighbors are weeping...and not for Michael. Group Will Sue McDonald's Over Happy Meal Toys
Filed under: News, Interviews The Center for Science in the Public Interest (aka CSPI aka America's Fat Police) are threatening to sue McDonald's, the nation's largest burger maker, over the toys it includes in its Happy Meals for children. I would hope that any judge worth his pressed robes would take any suit proposed by the CSPI and put it right in the garbage where it belongs. I understand that America's kids are too fat and fewer McDonald's -- as opposed to more -- would probably be a good thing for most; however, how can one group attack toys? I mean, don't parents have some responsibility to monitor what their kids eat? I know teens at school will eat whatever they want and parents are often helpless to stop them. If a child is young enough to beg, whine and cajole a parent in to buying a Happy Meal, though, shouldn't that parent have enough spine to tell little Junior no? I think the CSPI's heart is in the right place. Yes, it would be great to reduce the fat and calories consumed by children. Banning toys from meals, though, shows that the CSPI's heads are out to a low-calorie lunch on this one. Let Mickey Ds serve Happy Meals, and let parents act like parents. http://xml.channel.aol.com/xmlpublisher/fetch.v2.xml?option=expand_relative_urls&dataUrlNodes=uiConfig,feedConfig,localizationConfig,entry&id=868400&pid=868399&uts=1277304993 http://www.aolcdn.com/ke/media_gallery/v1/ke_media_gallery_wrapper.swf Your Hottest News Stories 16-June-10 - I know I'm supposed to be all outraged about the Seattle cop punching the teen in her face because I'm black and stuff like that, HOWEVER, I don't know whether it's because I'm a jaded '80s baby tired of young people's lack of respect for authority or I'm just insensitive, but I think the girls in this video absolutely deserve what they got. The CSPI was emboldened by the action of California's Santa Clara County, which voted earlier this year to ban restaurants from giving away toys and other items that come with high-calorie meals for children.Permalink|Email this|LinkingBlogs|Comments | |

7 items you wanted at the age of 12 but probably didnt get
When I was twelve it was the 90s and I lived in the South. Parents in the south are notoriously lax about what kinds of dangerous things they will let their kids play with. Unfortunately for me, my parents were from the North and that meant that I often was left out in the cold when it came to getting to play with toys deemed dangerous by the media and society in general. Looking back at my decision-making skills, it was probably for the best, but I at the time I always felt like I was getting gypped. Here are a few of the things that most 12-year-old boys wanted for Christmas or a birthday but probably never got for one reason or another.7 Pony Its the one thing that boys and girls could somewhat agree on. Girls wanted to ride through the woods like a princess after watching My Little Pony, while boys wanted to saddle up and ride like cowboys on the ol range. But we didnt fully realize what an undertaking an animal of this size was. You needed food, shelter, shots and a litany of other things that made pony ownership both expensive and time consuming. Not to mention the danger of falling off a spooked horse in the middle of the woods. Face it, mommy and daddy only loved you enough to rent you a pony for your birthday party. Remind them of that when it comes time to pick a retirement home6 Four-Wheeler Sure, if you wanted to drive a motorcycle or a car youd have to wait till you turned 16, but for some reason four-wheelers were perfectly acceptable to drive as long as you could reach the pedals. They are exceptionally fun to ride but are ridiculously easy to tip over. Parents knew it was only a matter of time until you became comfortable enough to construct a crude dirt ramp and jump one of these things over a creek. There was a good reason Evel Knievel spent a good portion of his life coated in plaster and it had everything to do with thinking like a 12-year-old on a four wheeler. Need proof of this? The guy wore a cape his entire lifewhich was awesome but obviously not normal.5 BB Gun I think the film A Christmas Story may have ruined BB guns for my entire generation. And its not hard to see why a lot of parents are uneasy with the thought of arming their children. As a young man, I had friends with BB guns, and while it didnt always end badly, there were some one pump wars that ended with blood and crying and a lifetime of being stopped at airport metal detectors. Would you really end up shooting your eye out? Its hard to say. But for a lot of us, mom and dad werent going to give us the opportunity to do so.4 The Good Fireworks When youre a kid you dont really understand how fireworks actually worked, you only knew them to be awesome. Youd go to the fireworks stand and ask for the biggest box with those monster mortars that you saw at the 4th of July parade last year. Youd end up with a box of sparklers, those stupid black snakes that grew out of the ground, and a few of those funnels that sparked and screamed but never sent anything careening a couple hundred feet into the air like you dreamed they would. Youd get mad at the guy at the fireworks stand for bamboozling you into buying a product he knew you didnt want. Im 12, chief. Hit me up with the good rockets or Im coming back with that stick I smash those black snakes with and wail on your lying knees.3 Half-Pipe I had a friend that was lucky enough to have a half-pipe in his back yard. If you were a kid who rode BMX bikes, skateboarded or had roller-blades, you may have asked your parents to build you one, as it was the ultimate ramp experience. When you are little you dont understand things like liability and health insurance policy as they pertain to building a structure that will pit gravity against uncoordinated 12-year-olds. There were horrific bruises, stitches and a concussion that didnt deter the neighborhood children, but did cause panic amongst adults that lectured their battered children as they drove to the hospital. Even with the injuries, it was still fun. And most kids would tell mom it was totally worth it if their mouth wasnt wired shut for the next six to eight weeks.2 Compound Bow Some kids who wanted a serious bow went into full William Tell me why I cant get a red bandanna and a compression bow and go all John Rambo on the neighborhood. I lived in the south, so I had friends who had these babies from a young age, and honestly, they were more of a menace to neighborhood birds and squirrels than anything else. But it only took video of one kid on the local news coming home looking like General Custer to ruin Rambo-time for everyone within a 100 mile radius. It was always the stupidest kids that drew first blood and killed the fun of juvenile munitions for all of us.1 Trampoline There was probably not a more dangerous or enjoyable toy that you could get. There was the game popcorn and back flips, front flips and trying to bounce people off, and then came broken bones, concussions and agonizing bruises. Trampolines possessed all that was great about gravity and being a kid and mixed it in with all that was terrible about gravity and being a kid. You knew that everything that went up had to come down, but had no idea of the bone density needed to land at angles so awkward they would make Cirque du Soleil cringe. Hello bouncing funhello shattered femurgoodbye dreams of being a trampoline owner. |
